Under the Tobermory distillery name, the artisan Hebridean Distiller produces Tobermory Whisky and Ledaig Single Malts and, for the first time in its history, Tobermory Gin, which includes its Mountain, Coast and Hebridean expressions. Today, it is a thriving, expressive and unique distillery, true to its idyllic location on the Hebridean island of Mull. This year’s shortlist included a mix of whiskies from the Highlands to the island, showcasing some bold flavours including Jura 18 Year Old, which won the runner up prize, Old Pulteney 15 Year Old and Oban 14 Year old. After an expert panel carried out a blind tasting, Ledaig 18 Year Old was the winner. Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. This award-winning whisky was first matured for 16 years in ex-bourbon casks before being finished for 2 years in the finest sherry casks, giving the whisky delicious sweet and fruity notes.

Tobermory distillery is located on the Isle of Mull, off the west coast of mainland Scotland, the second largest of a group of islands that make up the Inner HebridesThe distillery produces 3 spirits, unpeated Tobermory Whisky, peated and smoky Ledaig and Botanical gins. Ledaig, named after the distillery location in Tobermory bay, pronounced (Led-chig), means 'afe haven’ in Gaelic. Ledaig has a lot in common with Islay, namely the use of peated malt, but it cuts a much different figure than your typical Islay peat bombs. Primarily that is because this 18 year old malt is finished with sherry casks, a practice that is not unknown in Islay but which isn’t all that common. There are dates, raisins and oranges, all with a nice chewy texture to them.On a side note, private entities were just allowed to start making their own alcohol a few years ago. I have seen someone make mead, and there are now a couple of gin distillers, too. Brass Lion, one of the gin makers, just barreled their first batch of Singaporean single malt in the middle of 2018. They are doused in sherry and cinnamon, which gives a delicate spice and a hint of warmth to the overall dram.

Ledaig 18YO is a limited release. I sampled batch 2 which was sold in a stylish wooden case. They changed the appearance for batch 4. Nose: seaweed notes and eucalyptus, followed by mineral smoke and oyster shells. Hints of brass polish. While there is a hint of berries and tobacco, the sherry is not very prominent.
